Cover Reveal: Lord's Curse by Brandy Ackerley

I am so glad to be here. When I first started writing, I wasn't even willing to contemplate my first book coming out. Now, its been over a year since Hunter's Gambit was released and all I can think about is how blessed I am! For me, seeing the cover is the first time the publishing of a novel feels real to me. I think that's almost certainly because ordering the cover is literally the final task on my list of pre-publishing tasks. It's actually what I look forward the most to in all of this chaotic mess that is publishing. 

But that enough about me today. After all, you didn't come for me... you came here for THIS!!!!

Kuzunoha, bastard daughter of the Tanaka family, is determined to leave the village she grew up in and take control of her own life. 

Her sister, Himiko, is just as determined to keep their splintering family together. 

Isn't it amazing!? The last book had Kuzunoha on the cover... this time around we have a very handsome looking Deckard. As always, Starla Huchton did an amazing job! I am in awe of her skill and I can't decide which cover is more incredible; this or the cover for Hunter's Gambit. Seeing them side by side doesn't help... I just can't decide. Let me know what you think though?!

Last year, I gave the cover a full month before going to the printing press. I decided that was way too long to wait for book 2! Instead, Lord's Curse will be published on June 12, 2020, just two weeks from now! The ebooks should be available everywhere, of course, and will be up for pre-order in just a day or so; as usual, I'll post up the links as soon as I get them. 

Unfortunately, it isn't all good news; due to the current pandemic, the physical release will take longer to print. I will let you know as soon as I have received the first batch, of course, and if you're ordering from Amazon, please be patient and know they are coming, just behind. And of course, if you just can't wait, you can pick up the ebook first and get the physical copy later.

It's going to be a short update today, but that shouldn't make it any less powerful. Earlier this week, I put through a small change... wherever you buy ebooks, I have lowered the price of Hunter's Gambit down to $2.99 USD. So, if you were waiting until the ebook was cheaper to grab a copy, now is your time! 

Here Again, Gone Again, Jiggity-Jig

I received my novel back from the editor! She loved the changes, said that I managed to fix 99% of her originals issues with it. I was able to fix those in under a day and have already returned them to her for a final grammar pass. So, this is it, guys. I'm waiting on payday to order my cover, but that is the last thing big thing that I need to do. I have been working on the back cover copy so as soon as we have the cash I can send in my request. Hopefully, it won't take too long and I'll be able to do a cover reveal in May.

I am stupidly excited about it.

I still have work to do for its release of course. Arranging cover reveals on other sites and blogs, putting the book up for pre-order on Amazon and the rest. Getting the novel up on Goodreads, ordering the print copies... all of that fun stuff.

It's going to be awesome.

In less stellar news, due to Corvid-19, our local government has finally put official restrictions in place for the summer. No groups of more than 15 may congregate for any event. This means that for the first time in literally over a century, we won't be able to celebrate the Calgary Stampede. It also means that our writer's convention most likely won't be going ahead. Or, at least, won't be going ahead as scheduled. We've been told to expect an email later today on how they expect to proceed. I'll keep you guys updated on what that means as well. I am disappointed though. I was so excited, finally knowing that I was going to be able to share a new novel with all of the readers there.

In a final bit of whimsy, I'll let you know that I started playing Black Desert Online this week as well. While I will never be a hardcore gamer, I thought I would let you guys know that I am finding horse wrangling most enjoyable in it. Here is my character riding her two horses. The brown one is Alenos (a tier 1 stallion, the lowest tier and my first catch) and the grey is Dapple (a tier 3 stallion).

I'll end this post off with the hope that you guys are all staying safe out there. And let me know if any of you are playing Black Desert. Cover Reveal - Erin Embly

Today I'm coming to you with another cover reveal!

Cover Reveal - A Raven's Revenge

I've been in the writing gig for quite a while now and while I usually stick to myself, a few years back I traded work with some other authors and did developmental/beta-read edits for them. One of those authors was Linda Bloodworth. We became friends bonding over not only our books but our shared love for anything Sailor Moon related. Anyway's, I read through her book A Raven's Touch, a kick-ass story about a half-angel fighting the forces of evil. She published that book a year afterward in 2015, and today I have the absolute honour of letting everyone know that she is finally releasing the sequel!

Cover Reveal - Shard & Shield

I have mentioned Laura VanArendonk Baugh more than once on my site here. Part of that is her stellar personality. I've met her more than once at the WWC convention here in Calgary, and I've friended her on FB. The other reason I tend to mention her is that I love her writing. The first time I met her, I was looking through books at WWC and got stupidly excited upon seeing the cover for her novel, Kitsune-Tsuki. I felt so embarressed when she asked where I'd seen them to be so excited and I had to tell her that it was Goodreads. If I remember correctly, I ended up picking up Kitsune-Tsuki and Kitsune-Mochi that night despite saying that I wasn't going to buy any books until the next day. I loved both and when I've sat in on panels of hers, I am always astounded by how knowledgable and personal she is. So when she asked in her newsletter if anyone would be willing to help with her cover reveal, I jumped at the chance! 

Shard & Sheild is the first in a new epic fantasy trilogy by Laura VanArendonk Baugh and will be out on July 2nd!

I've been reading excerpts from this novel on Laura's feed for a while and I can't wait to pick up a copy! Also, if I may say, the cover is gorgeous and I'd be tempted to pick it up even if I didn't know that Laura is one of those tried and true authors whose work I love reading. The picture brings to mind a world on the edge of ruin with people thrown in a situation that they weren't really prepared for and having to fight just to survive and the orange hues pull me in. The winged one in the background is the clincher for me. I've already got it in my "Want to Read" file on Goodreads.

Cover Reveal!!!

Today is the day! Thank you so much for coming by everyone! I'm a writer, but I don't think it's possible to convey in words just how excited (and terrified) I am to finally have my novel coming out. I wrote the vast majority of the book in 2015, managing to finish it off in early 2016. I then spent the next three years essentially working on edits for it. I have found out that my editing can be described simply as a rewrite, with the edits thereafter becoming smaller and smaller with each round. It took forever, but the day when it is out will be very soon! But I'll tell you about the release date after showing you what you came here for. The gorgeous cover!

Hunter's Gambit will be coming out on March 15, 2019. It will be available at all the usual digital locations; Kobo, Kindle, Nook and iBooks, but I will also have a physical copy being sold! You can purchase one from Amazon or directly from me and have it signed, but it may take longer to get to you. Another option is, of course, to come and see me in Calgary for When Words Collide this year. Hunter's Reveal; Part 2

The full name for this book is Hunter's Gambit, Book 1 of the Kitsune-Ken Series. Kitsune-ken is a game they play in Japan and its a lot like Rock, Paper and Scissors over here. There are three positions. If your palms are flat against your legs, you have chosen Lord (more correctly Lord translates to Village Head, but lord is faster for my purposes here). If your hands are up to your temple with your index and middle fingers extended and the rest closed (like fox ears), you have chosen Fox. If you keep your hands up in between (making it look like you're holding a rifle), then you have chosen Hunter. The Lord beats Hunter, because the hunter is the lord's loyal vassal. The Fox beats Lord, because the fox can lock the lord into an illusion that he can't escape from. The Hunter beats Fox, because he has a gun and therefore a way to kill the fox before they can ensnare the hunter. 

Here is a video of some people teaching the game to a few people. I am none of the people in this video, I simply grabbed it as a fun example of how to play, because sometimes you need to see to understand it. 

I chose this as my series name since it seems as though the main characters of my book interact in this way with each other. One always beats the other and some are always coming out on top of certain situations. And while the characters are people, not a game and therefore it doesn't always work, it does make me smile to imagine my characters growling at each other and then frowning and holding their hands out, ready to play their own version of Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide who is right.

Japan-Inspired Fantasy Novels; Part 2

Today in this sequel post, we're talking about stories that use Asia as a storytelling conduit, whether they are written by Asian writers or not. While there are hundreds out already and more coming out every day, they do tend to be overshadowed in the West. I can understand why... people tend to fall back on what they've always known and if you've never jumped into Asian storytelling before, they can be a bit difficult to understand. There is a reason their anime, manga and television shows always seem weird to us. They have different tropes and different ways of telling their stories than a Western storyteller would. While I find this difference fascinating, especially since I write in what I consider a mixture of both Eastern and Western styles, I know that most people would be snoring by the end of the first paragraph, so I'll spare you and simply say if you're interested in the subject, take a look at this Reddit discussion (I found the first five or so comments give a good primer into the most obvious differences, though I haven't read all eighty-five yet, so I can't guarantee that it stays decent the whole way through). Instead, I will limit myself to suggesting a few of the books that I have felt really stand out and should be read by everyone. This set is going to be in the fiction and urban fantasy genres with the more traditional type of fantasy stories coming in the next installment.

Let's start with the first two that just about everyone has read.

Under the Hawthorn Tree by Ai Mi

Originally written as a series of blog posts, the story gained international fame when it was picked up by a publisher. Since its first publishing in 2007, it has sold over a million copies in China alone and been made into a movie. Adding to the mystery is that the author's name Ai Mi is a pen name, meaning that nobody knows who the actual author is. Those interesting factoids aside, the story tells a poignant tale of innocence and love during China's cultural revolution between 1966 and 1976. The main character, Jingqiu, is a young girl sent for "re-education" in the countryside. While there she meets the young son of a high-ranking military official. Their love can't happen, yet they can't stay apart, even before love blooms. When I finished reading it, I actually cried. Despite the translation making the story seem a bit wooden, this is a book that will make you feel for the main characters lost in a changing world. If you aren't one of the millions who have already read this book, pick it up.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

I realize that I will probably take some flak from purists for putting this book on the list. While it is in no way an actual representation of the life of a Geisha, it is a beautifully written story and I will say that I enjoyed it much more than Geisha, A Life, written in response by Mineko Iwasaki (the geisha Arthur Golden spoke to and based his story very loosely on) & Randy Brown. I think that this is due to the story being told as a story and not as a memoir. Chiyo/Sayuri is an active force in her story and her life, even when she's outwardly calm and talking about how she has no power in her own life. On the other hand, Mineko's story is very realistic but she as a person is passive and I found her real-life memoir much less to my taste. On the other hand, I fully admit that I don't generally read memoirs as a genre and if you tend to prefer them, then you may prefer Geisha; A Life to Memoirs of a Geisha. However, it still makes my list as a well-written love story that I think is an engaging surface view into Japan during the early twentieth century.  

Red Winter by Annette Marie

I discovered this book randomly through an Amazon ad or something mid-last year and I was drawn in by the cover. Still, I didn't buy it, and just sort of hovered around it until November last year. I visited my husband's work for a day and ran out of books to read. That one had recently come up on my list again and it was on sale, so I grabbed it and started reading... and couldn't put it down. I think it took me all of a day or two to read it and within moments of finishing it, I had picked up the next two. The main character, Emi, is the chosen of Amaterasu, the sun goddess of Japan and the one to which Japan's royal family supposedly trace their family roots to(I've included the link to her Wikipedia page here, as I find Japanese mythology incredibly interesting). Unfortunately, Emi's life changes when she saves the life of a kitsune and discovers that being the chosen of Amaterasu may mean giving up her life to the goddess. The series is an urban fantasy that kept me entertained and hooked the entire ride. In addition, the author has put 2-3 pictures in the book, showing the characters. It was a really nice touch, and something I'm hoping to do with my books one day (though probably not with my first few)

The Good Brother by E.L. Chen

I picked up this novel when I happened to get lucky and see the cover at the 2016 When Words Collide convention. I started reading it soon after and pretty much couldn't put it down. This novel doesn't quite fit in with the other novels in this list for one main reason; it doesn't take place in Japan or any part of Asia. Instead, it takes place in Toronto, Canada. The main character, Tori, is a first-generation Canadian haunted by the death of her elder brother, trying to come to terms with not only his death but her own guilt over not wanting to follow the path her well-meaning parents have set for her while trying to understand who she wants to be. I won't say anymore so that I don't spoil the ending, but I will say go out and buy this one. This is a book that does not get enough love considering how incredibly well-written it is. The twist at the end of the story isn't surprising, but it hits hard, almost like a physical punch to the gut and the catharsis at the end of the book brings everything to a close brilliantly. If you haven't already, this book is one to pick up. 

I have four more books to do but unfortunately, those won't be coming out next week as I have a surprise for you all... Drum roll, please.........

         I look Darien's way, and he risks a quick glance from the road. For that brief moment, our eyes connect, and I see him—really see him—and he's scared. No way I’m going to let anyone else I care about get hurt.  

         “Seliki is the one who should be worried,” I crack my knuckles. A flash of heat runs wickedly through my body. The entire car heats up, and Darien lifts his arm to shield himself.

         “Save your heat for Seliki. Kindly try not to cook my car seats, thank you,” he says, teasing me.

Linda Bloodworth Cover Reveal A Raven's Touch Day 3

Today we're counting down to the cover reveal of A Raven's Touch, by Linda Bloodworth. For the next few days, get closer to the cover and read a different sample each day.

Who is Linda Bloodworth?
Linda Bloodworth loves chips, like really, ketchup to be exact. Ketchup chips are only found in Canada. Lucky for Linda she lives in Toronto with her husband and three fur babies. In between writing, debating for hours about the Oxford comma, and the misunderstood semi colon; Linda enjoys camping, and getting away from the city on day trips.

Synopsis:
Bullied through high school, seventeen-year-old Justice St. Michaels is grateful for the help of her best friend Moira O’Fhey. Their only wish is to graduate high school, leave the sleepy town of Fallingbrook and all that happened behind them. The Heavens have other plans. Between growths on her back and being involved in explosive school fights, nothing seems to make sense. When an unexpected encounter with Darien Raventhorn causes worlds to collide it exposes the truth about who Justice's real identity. To avenge a family death, Justice must embrace her birthright, and slay the demon before all Hell breaks loose.

The officer nods and scribbles in his note pad. 

“You’re going to have to come with me.”

“What?” I ask.

“Let’s go,” the officer says, guiding me by my elbow back down the hall. 

“Hey! You can’t do that!” Moira shouts. 

Immediately, two officers block her view from me and hold Moira back. 

“Justice! You don’t have to talk to them! You have rights!” 

Moira belts out as I'm being led away. I look back to see her coils of red hair bouncing as her eyes peek over the policemen in time to give me one last look of concern.

A Raven's Touch Cover Reveal Day Four

It has been too long... sorry guys. Nanowrimo kicked my butt this year. I made my wordcounts daily and finished the month with 68,635 words and, more importantly, achieved my goal of finishing my novel. To date, this is the only novel that I have officially finished during Nanowrimo.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I took the next week off.

Or at least, that was my plan. I ended up either working overtime, or having plans or both everyday. It tired me out to say the least. I'm back though and ready to blaze on to meet my goals. This week those include writing a synopsis rough draft (*hiss*boo*), reading and cleaning my house. Easy goals.

My third goal is something for all of you!

Nearly a year ago, my friend Linda Bloodworth and I agreed to exchange novels and do a critique on them for the other person. Now, I am very glad to say, she has finished the process and will be releasing the novel this month on December 28th!
